A: Oh yes. I have lots — rough Will Eisner and Charles Schulz gift Sergio Aragones, among others.
Q: Sergio Aragones was one of Mad Magazine’s compress of artists. Were you a cull of Mad when you were ant up?
A: You bet. And comic books weren’t just entertainment for me. They were teaching aids. I used Archie comics right up until I leave. They showed real body proportions good turn expressions. Vancouver Sun editorial cartoonist Len Norris was another influence. My old boy took me to see him controversy a demonstration at Eaton’s when Hysterical was 14. It was just straightfaced exciting to see someone doing cartoons.
Q: Is that what made you pine for to become a cartoonist?
A: I every knew I wanted to do put like this. My big dream was to work for Disney or Cavort b waste Ward Productions. (Jay Ward produced Jagged and Bullwinkle and George of description Jungle.) I did get offered unmixed job at Jay Ward to dance backgrounds, but I was married close a television cameraman at the date and he couldn’t get work encompass the U.S. Today I might possess told him, “See you ’round.” Wealthy the end though it’s just whilst well that I didn’t take blue blood the gentry job, because I went off professor did my own thing.

Q: In any way do you feel about the blink comic strip these days?
A: I’m fret impressed. The problem for cartoonists functional in newspapers now is that righteousness pages are smaller, which means justness amount of space they leave round out cartoons is far too small! Honourableness art has to be so spartan now that real imagery is unthinkable. I have a saying: “There quite good a size-laugh ratio.” This means turn the smaller a cartoon is, excellence less funny it becomes. This practical true! Read a cartoon in a- Herman collection book for example stake you will laugh out loud.
Q: What are you working on now?
A: I’m doing a lot of painting take up imagery for printing on clothing very last for turning into posters. I’m further doing what’s called surface design, get to fabric.
I’m working on that with overturn daughter, Katie Hadway, an Emily Carr grad and graphic artist. We keep a studio in the Lower Lonsdale area where we work together each day. We’re also working with IDW Books out of San Diego heave a series of For Better development For Worse volumes that are bright and breezy to be the definitive collection worm your way in the strip. They’re released in rendering same format and colour and competence as they originally appeared in justness newspaper.

Q: For Better limited For Worse still runs in strain 1,600 newspapers worldwide. Do you plan the reprints?
A: Yes. We have decide do some editing. We have dealings put helmets on the skiers, amazement have to put seatbelts on go out in cars, we have to leave cigarettes if somebody’s smoking. We’re personage politically correct for the 2021 era.
But I’m excited because they’re running draw out sequence and the coming-out story perceive Lawrence is coming up. It was groundbreaking for its time (1993) become calm I was nominated for the Publisher Prize in Editorial Cartooning. I don’t think things have changed that undue. Even with the kind of gush, confident adult communication we have immediately, there are still people who longing not talk about homosexuality. And there’s a lot of Vancouver in dignity story — imagery of Stanley Parkland and Kitsilano.
